Who is Verna in The Fall of the House of Usher? Character explained

In cast quotes provided by Netflix, Gugino described Verna as "the executor of fate or the executor of karma." Importantly, Verna isn't an indiscriminate killer or monster who attacks people just for the fun of it. According to Gugino, Verna isn't the devil, and isn't even necessarily a villain at all. After all the Ushers die, Juno inherits their money as the sole member of the family and puts it all into the Phoenix Program, an addiction recovery and rehabilitation Center. Similarly, Fredreick’s wife and Lenore’s mother, Morelle, donates her compensation money from the family to domestic violence charities. Furthermore, she opened a nonprofit in her daughter’s name, who saved her, which ended up saving countless lives. In the end, the Usher money goes into repairing the damages the family left on the world during their stay.

Following the corporation's victory, Roderick's boss Rufus Griswold (Michael Trucco) proclaims that Roderick's now his right-hand man and the person he trusts more in the world, and he even is going to build adjoining offices in the company's new building. It's a bit much, but it very clearly signals that Roderick has gained enough power that it's time for him to enact his and Madeline's plan to make the transition from partner to sole CEO. And for Edgar Allan Poe nerds, the show teases their plot as Madeline presents Rufus with a bottle of Amontillado wine. They toast to each other, and after they both drink, Madeline realizes that Roderick has poisoned her. They take their last breath as their childhood home falls on them. Verna then appears on top of the house wearing a black lace dress.

Death would also laugh when asked to name its price as Verna did because Death has none. She shepherds a species she finds endlessly fascinating because she knows all of us, who we could have been, and what we are capable of. And within moments, the Usher home was a pile of wood and rocks on a lot, as Dupin, barely able to process what he had just witnessed, looked on. Madeline, without children of her own, didn't have to think much. While under testimony, he went against what he said he would do, saying instead that Dupin was harassing him, that Fortunato did no wrong, and this his signatures were never forged. The final episode finally reveals what Roderick and Madeline did—and were running from—all those years ago, and how they first got involved with Verna in the first place.

Greystone Mansion

There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. It’s a deal with the devil, a classic setup, and a strong enough act of hubris to stand entirely on its own. But Flanagan refuses to let his show be anything less than sweeping, and to comment on any less than the whole of the 20th century. Flanagan shows us photos of Verna palling around with people she seems to have made similar deals with, though it’s never clear what her motivations are.

He believes the Usher name has come to an end now, and he must submit to Verna’s desires. Every mistake he has ever made haunts him, and he blames himself for his children’s deaths since they died for his ambition and greed. Thus, for a long lifetime of absolute control and wealth, Madeline and Roderick only have to agree that the day the twins die, so will their bloodline. For the Ushers, who grew up knowing their blood should’ve gotten them a seat at the table but didn’t, this offer is tempting and impossible to turn down. Even though the pair have secured a bright future in Fortunato, nothing is set in stone. As such, if Verna’s offer is real and will grant them a grandiose life free of consequences, they can give their kids and grandkids a short but luxurious life.

A reaction to fussy Victorian styles, American Foursquare emphasized boxy lines, “honest” carpentry and plain facades. It is considered a cousin to both the Prairie and Craftsman styles of architecture. This delightful 1886 Pasadena home is a charming example of the Folk Victorian style of architecture. These dollhouse like houses were much more functional than most Victorian styles, with family-friendly, regular floor plans and a lack of ornamentation—perfect for hardworking, everyday people. Where would we be without those energetic civic boosters that built Los Angeles? The prolific Charles Fletcher Lummis founded the Southwest Museum, was an editor at the Los Angeles Times, and still managed to design this house (the name of which means “the Sycamore” in Spanish) on the banks of the Arroyo Seco.

Nonetheless, a significant shift occurs when Prospero “Perry” Usher, the youngest of the lot, meets a gruesome end. Perry wants to prove his worth in the family and tries to make millions out of nothing by throwing a hedonistic orgy in an abandoned building. After a creepy encounter with an unnamed woman, Perry, and his guests die viciously after a mistake rains acid upon the entire room.

The house is now located in Brand Park and has been beautifully restored by the Glendale Historical Society. The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out.

Also, after Verna killed Lenore, the coulda-been-a poet Roderick Usher began reciting (what we know is) “The Raven” to express his grief as an actual raven appeared. She also changed back into a raven after the collapse of the Ushers’ childhood home in the series finale. While Roderick clearly felt lots of remorse for the collateral damage that his successes had caused through the years—Verna explicitly showed him the deaths he was responsible for—Madeline felt absolutely none. She instead blamed "the consumers," the people whose lives are made worse by taking in the products that they (and others) make available.

Verna continues to cross paths with each Usher family member right before their untimely, and gorey, deaths. For example, she works at the animal rescue Napoleon Usher visits to get a black cat, which he ends up chasing off a balcony, falling to his death. She also kills Camille L’Espanaye by transforming from a security guard at her half-sister Victorine's research lab into a murderous chimpanzee. She has the ability to see the future, telling Lenore (Kyliegh Curran) what will become of her mother, Morella (Crystal Balint), after Lenore's death.

It's a parable of what the relentless pursuit of money and power might do to a group of people. It's also a story about the opioid epidemic, centered on karmic retribution against the family dynasty behind the fictional Fortunato Pharmaceutical company. But it's also an intricate web of Edgar Allan Poe references, from the character names, to the nature of their deaths. Deeming the same more valuable than a long life lived in poverty, Madeline and Roderick agree to Verna’s offer and sign their family’s future away. Nonetheless, after they leave the establishment, both presume the night’s events were a shared delusion since they can find no trace of Verna or the bar.
